Choose You in the New Year!

The American Cancer Society is asking you to Choose You in the New Year!  We all like to make resolutions for the new year, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had those resolutions fall by the wayside a few weeks in.  Sure, I'll try to go to the gym 4 times a week, or wake up early and exercise before work, or even just eat better...and then life begins again!

This year, let's make one of our goals committing to Choose You!  Per the American Cancer's Society's Choose You campaign "When you make your Choose You Commitment, you'll get access to helpful videos, quizzes, and other tools, as well as blogs by other women working toward similar goals. You can recruit your friends and family to support your effort. There's even an option to add a financial incentive, for extra motivation. It’s a new year, time to choose you!"

Here are a few helpful hints from the recent feature on Cancer.org:
  1. No matter what your goal, it helps to make it specific.  Instead of "get more exercise" or "eat better", try "I resolve to walk 30 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays" or "I will eat a piece of fresh fruit every night after dinner."
  2. Eat your veggies first.  Make it a goal to fill half your plate with vegetables.  They tend to be low in calories and packed with nutrients.  Let lean proteins play a supporting role in your meals.  Also, eat the rainbow!  The more colors you eat, the more likely you're hitting all of the nutrients you need.
  3. See the sunrise (easy to say in winter! :) ) Early workouts are easier to squeeze into your hectic schedule, and they save you the need to shower twice.  Also, I recently read that working out in the morning can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly at night (#11 in this article).
  4. Prepare in advance for the day you'll quit smoking. Discard cigarettes and ashtrays in your home and car; stock up on oral substitutes like sugarless gum, hard candy or carrot sticks; and practice saying, “No thank you, I don’t smoke,” when offered a cigarette. Find more quit tips at cancer.org/smokeout.
  5. Stay on top of health screenings. Regular screenings by a health care professional can help find cancer early, when it’s easiest to treat. Not sure what you need to have done or how often? Check our handy screenings guide.
