Fighting Cancer By What We Eat?

In a recent email from SunWarrior (which I am paraphrasing here.  I cannot find a way to link the actual email), I read about Angiogensis-based Medicine - the practice of restoring the body's natural ability to grow new capillary blood vessels in the body - being used as a new approach to fighting cancer and other diseases.  According to Dr. William Li, MD, it is possible to eat foods that reverse or starve cancer, and one of the best anti-angiogenic treatments involves eating certain natural foods to stop the growth of the blood vessels supporting cancerous cells.  I'm certainly not a doctor, but eating a diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean proteins can help to maintain a healthy weight, which is one of the American Cancer Society's suggestions for the prevention of cancer.

Dr. Li suggests this list of top cancer fighting foods: Green Tea, Strawberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Oranges, Grapefruit, Lemons, Apples, Pineapple, Cherries, Red Grapes, Red Wine, Bok Choy, Kale, Soybeans (especially fermented soy like Nato), Ginseng, Maitake Mushroom, Licorice, Turmeric, Nutmeg, Artichokes, Lavender, Pumpkin, Sea Cucumber, Tuna, Parsley, Garlic, Tomato, Olive Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Dark Chocolate, and Pomegranates.  I have seen similar lists for "cancer-fighting antioxidents" and "foods you should eat every day" as well.  Yahoo.com recently posted a slideshow with similar information.

Dr Li's discussion on using food to fight cancer can be watched below (it is a YouTube video).

On another note - Dana-Farber recently established a blog called Insight.  They update every couple of days with all sorts of cancer prevention tips, news and topics.

**Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 10th at 6:15PM at St. Basil's Chapel in Bridgewater.  This is our last meeting before Kick-Off.  Are you excited yet?!**

So interesting. I am going to try some of those foods off of your list that I don't usually eat.
